NATIONAL LEAGUE RESULTS AND STANDINGS - APRIL 5

By Bob Williams

Desert Rose finishes this session undefeated with a 20-0 mark!  Congratulations to manager Dennis Christenson for putting together an unbeatable combination.

Today's games were completed in near record time as all the games were low scoring, pitcher and defense dominated contests.  There were only 79 runs scored today as compared with 181 on Tuesday.

Grandview Terrace 13 - Edward Jones 7

Grandview saves its best for last upsetting third place Edward Jones in the season finale.  Big Don Anderson led the way going 3 for 4 with a double and a triple while Rich Moschel and Rich Collings both stroked 3 hits with Collings doubling in the fourth.  Paul Struglinski and Gene Renico both showed some muscle with Struglinski blasting a two run homer in the sixth and Renico a three run homer launched in the fifth.  Renico has also doubled in the third.  Credit Ray Huston with a first inning double.  Edward Jones lead off man Ed Carino led off the game with a triple leading to a four run first inning.  Carino, Donna Reed and John Albee all had 3 hits in the loss.  Lyle Bakken had an RBI double in the fourth.

Desert Rose 9 - VFW 1

Mighty Desert Rose, behind the great pitching of Dick Downs, finishes 20-0.  The Roses scored 4 in the first and 4 in the second but then were shut out the rest of the way except for one run in the fifth featuring a Bruce Stannard double.  Great pitching by VFW's Ron Eppley and fine defense held the Roses to one of their lowest outputs of the year.  However, the offense did practically nothing until a seventh inning triple by Tom Turner followed by John Kasper's second double (3 hits) brought in their only run.  Myrl Wagenknecht had three hits with a double and sub Larry Ott legged out a sixth inning double.

Brenda's Kitchen 6 - Liberty Buick 1

In another low scoring defensive battle with great pitching Al Schifini out duels Don Spotts.  Brenda's got back-to-back triples from Roger Stone and Gregg Owens in the two run first inning.  Larry Lienemann led off the second inning with a triple while Kenny Doyle launched a three run home run in Brenda's third.  Liberty's pitcher, Don Spotts, deserved a better fate scattering 11 hits, all singles, giving up only 6 runs.

Larry Ott Realty 5 - Pruitt's Furniture 3

Larry Ott Realty climbs back into second place with this win over Pruitt's Furniture. Pitcher Spud Miller out dueled Pruitt's Len Wicketts giving up only 2 extra base hits and just 3 runs.  Neither team exactly tore the cover off the ball.  The Ott's got doubles from Ron Kolacek, Miller and sub Dick Pribnow.  Pruitt's Gary Willis went 3 for 3 and crushed a long home run in the fourth inning and Will Monks also had a 3 hit day.  Sub Vince Fanto tripled in the seventh and came in to score Pruitt's last run.

AZ Smile Dentistry 7 - VW of Peoria 3

In another pitchers' duel Smile Dentistry's T. R. Mickelson gives up only 3 runs and just 2 extra base hits.  Mike Kennedy (a double) and Arlan Seefeldt went 3 for 3.  Tony Sevier and Dave McCart legged out doubles.  VW's Jay Kint pitched well enough to win most.  Karen Hill and Mike Rigsby both went 3 for 3 in the loss, while Chuck Zehner and Jim Zeeb tripled and doubled respectively as VW scored twice in the sixth.

AZ Center for Cancer Care 6 - Far ar Chiropractic 5

Another pitchers' battle featured Cancer Care's Carl Johnson out dueling Farrar's Jim Hayes. Cancer Care trailed Farrar 5-2 when they sprung for a four run rally in the sixth inning highlighted by a Lloyd Leonard double.  Tom Teichmann and George Asan also legged out two baggers in this narrow victory. Sub Dave McCart made three outstanding plays in the outfield and drove in Cancer Care's final two runs in the four run sixth.  Farrar's Don Schuster tripled and scored in the fifth and Gary Krause doubled and Paul Moye tripled in Farrar's three run sixth inning.  Farrar had two runners on in the seventh with only one out but that is where the rally fizzled.

Town Cryers Realtors 10 - Daily News Sun 3

In our final game of the session, Town Cryers' pitcher Dennis Hagerty twirled his magic shutting out DNS for the first four innings and then giving up just single runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh.  Hagerty also tripled in the first two runs of the game followed by doubles from Ray Keller and Gene Sutter for the first inning four run max out.  Gary Beymer doubled in a pair in the sixth, after a triple from sub Randy Earp.  Beymer, Hagerty, Keller and Sutter all had 3 hit days in the win.  Daily News Sun's Rich McAndrews, Gus Grell and sub Bob Fellenz enjoyed 3 hits each with Fellenz doubling and scoring in the fifth.

Have a safe summer and hopefully we will see you in the Fall.
